Men's 2nd XI win thriller to maintain league lead

Old Bristolians Westbury's Men's 2nd XI beat Barrow Gurney 1st XI in a one run thriller on Saturday to remain top of Bristol & District Division Four, as wins for and Men's 1st XI and Ladies' XI earlier in the week saw them continue strong league campaigns of their own.

Starting the week's senior fixtures on Thursday 20 June the Ladies' XI travelled to Thornbury in their T20 league and saw them off with ease, chasing down a less than run a ball total with five overs to spare. Zoe Snelling retired on 50*, with Izzy Tryfonos pick of the bowlers.

Saturday 22 June saw all three men's sides take the field again, the 1st and 2nd XI's with particularly big games as the 1's hosted WEPL Bristol & North Somerset league leaders Knowle, while the 2's knew a win away at Barrow Gurney would maintain their top stop in B&D Division Four.

At Fortress Failand the 1st XI won the toss, chose to field and took wickets at regular intervals. In fact Knowle were still yet to reach three figures when OBW's took their eighth; the visitors finding themselves 97-8.

Strong, resistant innings' from wicketkeeper Dale Ellis at number 9 and Sam Bendall at number 10 who each scored 31, got the visitors up to 164 all out.

Meanwhile away at Barrow Gurney the 2nd XI also won their toss but chose to bat, setting a target of 204 to win.

Opener Ben Harris (sponsored by The Angel) made a strong 61 off 94 balls, while there were also notable innings' of 27 from Dom Buxton at three and 33* from Alex Lee batting eight, before an important 17* from Ollie Harris.

Once chasing all of Barrow Gurney's top six made starts, but OBW's were able to find a breakthrough before all bar one of them pushed on.

The game remained in the balance with opener Guy Fisher managing to protect his wicket throughout, meaning with one over to go the hosts needed just six to win, with five wickets still in hand.

With former captain Simon Pratt thrown the ball, after four deliveries just two runs were needed, but at this point, the pressure showed on those with the bat.

Managing to keep the new batter on strike, Connor Jones left his crease wanting to seal the win with a ball to spare and was stumped by B Harris.

Then, in purely for the final ball and still needing two to win, Kieran Owen was run out by Pratt trying to secure a draw. It meant the match finished with Fisher watching from the non strikers end, not out on 81.

The most dramatic result seen in the men's section so far this season, the result gave the 2nd XI 18 points and sees them maintain top spot in B&D Division Four, nine points ahead of Long Ashton 1st XI.

Returning to Fortress Failand OBW's Men's 1st XI secured their win in less dramatic fashion, chasing down 165 to win with exactly eight overs to spare.

Batting at five Rob Cunliffe (sponsored by Regency Purchasing Group) made 59 off 91 which proved the side's stand out performance with the bat.

Sadly the men's 3rd XI picked up the only senior loss of the week, falling to Lodway 2nd XI at home.

Losing the toss and being put in to bat OBW's made 154, Palash Barman falling just short of 50, before the visitors knocked off the runs in 23 overs.

Elsewhere in the club the U-13 girls beat Bishopston by nine wickets.

Restricting them to just 42, Penny Lenton took three wickets for just two runs, before the chase was finished inside six overs.

An honourable mention goes to Agatha who, playing four years ahead of herself, bowled a maiden with her first over, conceding just one run in total.

This week the men's sides face Stapleton, Bristol Lions and Long Ashton respectively, while the ladies do not have a game.
