OBWs DOMINANT IN LAKE SIDE CLASH

Saturday saw the Firsts playing away to Portishead – on what is rumoured to be Gloucestershire’s second XI ground……

Our arrival was greeted with a carnival atmosphere of school children, bagpipers, horses, local clubs and a reassuring number of paramedics. During an excellent warm up devised by Will the local residents Zumba’d off up the hill leaving just the cricketers, umpires and pink flamingoes to get down to business.

OBWs won the toss and chose to bowl under damp skies. On a lively looking deck with a strong wind behind him Stu McArthur bowled excellently taking 3/30 – a mix of well utilised short balls and genuine pace unsettling and removing three of their top 5. Will Penny at the other end bowled with great control on a full length to take 2/21, removing both of their openers. The first 16 overs left the home side at 39/5 and in trouble.

Stu was replaced by Griff who despite carrying an injury took 4 wickets for just 6 runs off his 8 overs while Swetman came on at the other end to keep the pressure on ending with 1/15 off 5.5. Orr also bowled a tidy 5 overs for 21 runs. The effort in the field was good with a highlight being a one handed, running backwards, full length, low to the ground diving catch from Will Rudd – one the for the highlights reel!

Following a very good tea our batsmen set about knocking off the 103 required to win. The game was won with the loss of two wickets being Swetman for a stylish 22, Ric hit a good looking 22 before being given out leaving one that the umpired judged to be going on to hit. Will Rudd followed his epic in the field with a solid 30* and Tavare continued the theme ending on 22*

Overall a solid win, outplaying the opposition and keeping pressure on throughout the game.

On to next week – Pak Bristolians CC at home.
