Thanks to the hard work of Stu Mac, Griff, Will Penny and others, the club are pleased to announce that Australian batsman Ash Streker has signed up to be our overseas player for 2017.
Ash is a 24 year old highly talented Top Order batsman, part time bowler and top class fielder who is currently 1st XI Captain of Malvern Cricket Club in the Victorian Sub District Competition.
Having played 1st XI Senior cricket since age 14, Ash has an extremely mature head on his shoulders, along with a high level cricket brain. His strong all round game has seen him be a vital and successful player for Malvern, St Kilda and McKinnon Cricket Clubs. He has played alongside some International and First Class cricketers through his career including Peter Handscomb (Aus/VIC), Rob Quiney (Aus/VIC), Michael Beer (Aus/VIC), Steven Mullaney (Notts) and Wayne White at Malvern.
He has competed at the top level of Junior Representative Cricket in the Victorian Championships from age 14 through to 18 and also captained all of these teams. Twice he was named player of the tournament for his classy innings, crucial wickets and outstanding fielding.
Ash has had success with the bat as an opener but also at 3, 4 and 5. Ash possesses the ability to score quickly which leaves him a dangerous player in all forms of cricket.
2013 was the first season Ash played at Malvern CC and he played a huge role in them winning the premiership with over 300 runs and some important wickets for the season. His gutsy match winning knock of 66 in the Semi Final after coming in at 2/8 was one of his finest, getting Malvern in to the Final.
Ash’s strong All Round game is polished off with the capacity to bowl tight off spin/Medium Pace and high class fielding, regularly taking game changing catches. This season Malvern’s 1st XI captain already has over 200 runs still with a few games to play. The highlight of his season was an 84 not out off 72 balls which included Five 6’s. It was a similar knock to his match winning 85 off 90 balls the previous season.
Often this season having to come in after losing very early wickets but has been able to play important rebuilding innings. Although his natural game is to score quickly with strong stroke play his shown his diverse range of skills and ability to adapt smartly.
Over the past few years Ash has played some huge knocks for each of his clubs. 102 not out for St Kilda which came off only 88 balls. At McKinnon he blasted 101 off 81 deliveries and at Malvern the unbeaten 84* off 72 balls mentioned before along with the 85 off 90 balls.
Still at age 24, Ash’s best years of cricket are just about to begin. Looking to continue to work hard and improve all aspects of his game he looks forward to doing some damage for OBWCC for the coming season. With 10 years of experience in senior 1st XI cricket Ash also wants to help improve the games and knowledge of others around him. His attitude and enthusiasm builds a strong club culture and is eager to taste team success at a high level.
We very much look forward to welcoming you Ash!
